Future Humans

We have been discussing the future of humanity in class recently and how humans will be different than they are now. Looking 50-100 years ahead, I am somewhat pessimistic in my thoughts on this, as I see somethings getting worse for humanity. In particular, climate change and the lack of progress, or even consensus that it is happening, have me worried about the future of humans. While Earth will continue to be here, humans are so fragile that I wonder what the tipping point will be like…will we be like the slow boiling frog in the pot (I think so), or will there be a single event that kind of kicks off a spiral. Either way, I do believe there is some hope, and that technology will provide some ways of keeping us from going the way of the dodo…

Designing machines that help humans reduce and reuse waste will be extremely important to our longevity. In addition, developing sensors in the future will also enable us to improve data gathering for designing machines and help us increase our chances of survival. There is some interesting working going on in carbon recapture technology as well that has me hopeful for the future for humans, you can take a look here…maybe we’ll figure out a way to just breathe in CO2 like plants…that would solve some of our issues. Or perhaps we’ll all just move to Mars…that would be interesting.

One final random thought, there is an excellent book series called the Foundation Series that is worth reading or if you’re lazy like me…listening to on audio book. It was interesting to go through because it talks about several centuries into the future and looks at what humanity will be like as it spreads across the galaxies.

Anyway, those are some of my thoughts on future humans…

Cheers,

FZ

I really enjoyed reading your blog post! Although it feels pessimistic, I think I have to agree with your thoughts on the future of humans in this deteriorating world. It is interesting to think that we have come to a point where we no longer have the faith/assurance that this planet will uphold long enough in a sustainable enough way to support human life, that we have to consider building human-altering devices to change ourselves in order to accommodate our unhealthy environment. Having to use life-supporting devices to simply get through the day because humans polluted the planet so badly does not seem like a reality I would ever want to be a part of.

These are indeed interesting thoughts. I too have doubts about the future of humans, specifically on earth. One thought I had when reading your blog post was whether you think it would be more likely that humans create devices to make living in the depreciating climate of the earth more feasible or that humans will escape to other planets? Just a thought I had.
